A man from Butere, Kakamega County, left locals and a waiter shocked after he addressed them in fluent Luhya, a language they thought he couldn’t understand. The incident occurred at a local hotel in Kakamega town, where the man, known as Wamakobe, alias Mtembezi Wamacups, experienced what he described as an awful encounter.

The men allegedly mocked his appearance and eating habits, oblivious to the fact that Wamakobe was fully aware of their comments. As the remarks continued, he decided to respond in Luhya, shocking everyone in the room.

“I heard every word they said about me. They didn’t know I could speak Luhya. When I finally responded, their faces were priceless,” he said.

“I was surprised and hurt. People should never assume others can’t understand them just because they look different,” he stated.

The encounter has drawn mixed reactions online. While many praised Wamakobe for standing up for himself, others criticized the locals and the waiter for their behavior.

“It’s a reminder to always be respectful, regardless of whether you think someone understands your language or not,” commented one user.

Wamakobe’s story highlights the importance of treating others with respect and underscores the risks of making assumptions based on appearances.
