A Business man took to his official social media account to narrate an experience he had with 6 young men in KRA Uniforms, who walked into his business premise and started asking him a lot of questions.
“Today 6 young men and women walked into my shop. They were all in KRA uniform. I have been in business for last 30 years, encountering Armed Robbers, Anticounterfeit officers, Police, Regulatory officers in Pharmacy, NSSF officers, NHIF officers, Kanjo, but never KRA”
According to the businessman this was the first time he had an encounter with such men. He said that the men started questioning him and allegedly went to an extent of asking him about matters beyond KRA, something he says made him impatient.
The men allegedly started asking the businessman whether he had other businesses, what his turnover was, the Rent he pays and also about his landlord. The Businessman at this point grew very impatient and issued a warning;
“When they persisted with many questions, I told them to next time come armed with 2 things (Mambo ni Matatu, sorry ni Mawili… The act that empowers them to ask questions, and police to provide them with Security).
According to the businessman he couldn’t start betraying his landlady who has been good to him all those years. He told the KRA men to go search about any information concerning her landlady at the Lands Office.
According to a renowned blogger who shared the story, this could The Revenue Service Assistants who recently graduated from their training. This is a new group established by the government to ensure tax compliance.
A recent report indicates that KRA has already deployed the Service Assistants and it seems many Kenyans are yet to understand the role of this tax agents. Some of their duties include online registration of trading businesses, verifying tax payers details, supporting compliance with TIMS and excise regulations as well as data collection for the taxman.
