As the Azimio One Kenya Coalition anti-government protests continue, rowdy protesters have smashed into the Kitengela town Eastmart Supermarket branch.

This came after the leader of the Azimio, Raila Odinga, claimed that the government had hired thugs to destroy property.

After a struggle with police, the protesters ransacked the supermarket and stole items worth millions of shillings.

On Wednesday, July 12, the authorities confronted protesters using tear gas, forcing numerous establishments to close.

Around the nation, protesters took to the streets, with some of them blocking key thoroughfares and interstates.

A part of the Nairobi Motorway was stopped by rowdy youth along Mombasa Road, and the barriers separating the two motorways were destroyed.

The action compelled the highway’s administration to cease operations, obstructing access to and from the Nairobi CBD.

“We regret to inform you that a section of the Nairobi Motorway toll services has been temporarily halted at Mlolongo, Syokimau, and SGR Toll Stations due to the ongoing demonstrations,” said a portion of a statement from Moja Motorway, the organisation responsible for administering the Nairobi Motorway.

The Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) had previously warned that maandamano was costing the nation roughly KSh 3 billion everyday.

“People who are taking advantage of the demonstrations occasions unnecessary losses to the tune of about KSh 3 billion daily,” claimed KEPSA in a statement distributed to newsrooms on Wednesday, July 12.

KEPSA highlighted that the economic development of the nation is significantly impacted by business closures, looting, and property destruction.
