Mary Chebukati, the widow of the late Wafula Chebukati has made an emotional appeal for peace following her husband’s passing.

Speaking during his tribute, she reflected on the pain her family endured due to relentless social media attacks and misinformation over the years.

“Social media has killed him so many times because I used to get calls, and I could tell it was social media. It has not been fair to us,” she said, recalling the distressing moments when false rumors circulated about her husband’s well-being.

Mary described her late husband as a man who always advised them to ignore negativity and remain steadfast in their values. Despite the public scrutiny he faced, he remained focused on his duties urging his loved ones not to be swayed by the harsh words online.

“Now that he has rested, I hope they will give us some peace,” she pleaded, highlighting the emotional toll unwarranted criticism had taken on their family.

Wafula Chebukati, who served as the Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), was often at the center of public debate especially during election periods.

His role in overseeing elections made him a target of both praise and criticism. However, his widow emphasized that beyond his official duties, he was a devoted family man who deserved dignity in both life and death.

As the family mourns their loss, Mary’s message resonates with many who have seen the impact of online misinformation and cyberbullying, pleads for peace.

Sincere condolences to the family and may his soul rest in peace.
