Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for opposing the Affordable Housing Program, calling his stance hypocritical. Speaking on Thursday, Duale stated that leaders—whether in government or not—must support policies that benefit the public rather than shifting positions for political convenience.

“Leaders, whether in government or not, must unequivocally commit to supporting government policies, programs, and projects that are designed for the greater good of the people. It is both hypocritical and disheartening to see individuals who once championed this very program now opposing it,” Duale remarked.

His comments were a direct jab at Gachagua, who has recently criticized the Affordable Housing Program, arguing that it imposes an unnecessary financial burden on Kenyans. The former DP has been vocal about his opposition to the housing levy, insisting that it should not be mandatory and that Kenyans should not be forced into a policy they did not agree to.

Duale, however, defended the program, emphasizing that it aims to provide decent housing, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth. He accused Gachagua of playing politics and abandoning a cause he once supported while in government.

The Affordable Housing Program has remained a contentious issue in Kenya’s political landscape, with Ruto’s administration pushing for its implementation despite resistance from sections of the opposition and some former allies. Proponents argue that it will address the country’s housing deficit, while critics see it as an additional financial strain on struggling taxpayers.

Duale’s remarks highlight growing political tensions, particularly between Ruto’s allies and Gachagua, who has been positioning himself as a key voice for Mt. Kenya’s interests. His opposition to government policies could signal a deepening rift within Kenya Kwanza, potentially reshaping political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
