A courtroom session turned unexpectedly lighthearted on Thursday, October 24, when a remark by Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, representing embattled former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, triggered laughter among attendees.

While presenting his submissions, Njiru made an unanticipated comment directed at one of the three presiding judges, suggesting that the judge was not paying attention to his arguments.

“Your Lordship, I hope you are following. He doesn’t seem to be following my submissions, but I’ll leave it at that,” Njiru said.

The comment caught the courtroom by surprise, with the judge immediately questioning why the lawyer would challenge his attentiveness.

Njiru, appearing slightly flustered, opted to withdraw his remark by stating, “Let me leave it there.”

The tense moment was quickly diffused as laughter erupted throughout the court, briefly interrupting the proceedings.

Despite the humor, the exchange highlighted the tension between the defense team and the bench during what has been a high-stakes case for Gachagua.

Gachagu’s lawyer’s statement, while meant to highlight the importance of his arguments, appeared to momentarily distract from the serious nature of the case, leading to an unexpected burst of laughter.

The court session eventually resumed, though the brief moment of levity left an imprint on the otherwise formal atmosphere of the courtroom.
