The kenya revenue authority is constitutionally mandated to collect tax from kenyans in a bid to help the government in delivering services to people.

However, sometimes some workers in the agency have been accused of soliciting for bribes from tax payers in exchange for favours.

A case in point involves a Tailor and some businesses people in west Pokot who are now being required to pay huge sums of money to the taxman following alleged Refusal to give bribes demanded by the officers.

According to reports, the agency in one of the cases demands for KSH 1.74 million from a Tailor, a move that has shocked many people.

Joseph omondi who owns a sewing shop also owns a small and upcoming pazuri Africa training center where he trains youths on sewing in makutano town, is now being compelled to pay the Millions.

Omondi sews women’s dresses, suits and school uniforms and says that his business is too small to pay KRA the entire amount.

The Tailor who claims that KRA officers demanded for a bribe from him which he refused to pay, now wants president William Samoei Ruto to Intervene.

“KRA is being used as a weapon to frustrate small business people. We are struggling to make both ends meet,” he said.

He added “I went to the KRA Kitale office to find out where the problem was but I was not helped. I went to the Eldoret office and it was solved, hence I started to pay. It took like two years and I decided to go to the Eldoret office. I started filing the turnover tax obligation in May 2023,” he said.

According to Brian wekesa who is the accounting officer with the KRA at kitale office, omondi failed to pay tax arrears from 2018 which is why the amount has accumulated to KSH 1.74 million.

He said that the computation was done using the records he submitted to the KRA offices adding that he could have objected through the right channels.
