King of radio Maina Kageni doesn’t understand some of the African cultures that end up making us broke and other times, traumatised.
In today’s breakfast show with Mwalimu King’ang’i, a perplexed Maina said, “Let’s talk about African traditions that don’t make sense and need to go! People spend money they don’t even have on weddings and some funeral rites are just too crazy. People spend so much money on these occasions.”
Mwalimu King’ang’i asked Maina to live with that reality because the traditions are here to stay.
“Wachana na watu wa-celebrate hizi occasions (Leave people well alone, let them celebrate those occasions). They are our traditions.”
Maina stressed the fact that people spend even up to Ksh 7m to airlift a body from abroad for burial in Kenya. Or even keeping a body in the house for three days before the burial.
“Some of these traditions have to go, they are totally irrelevant in 2022. You sit back and wonder, are we nuts?“
A caller said that Kenyans are busy organising bullfights while Elon Musk is taking people to space.
Here are some strong reactions to the above sentiments on African traditions and if we should keep them or let them go.
Esther Jackie Agung: Wife inheritance makes me sick. I hate this practice in my Luo community. What if my hubby died of Aids or the bro who is supposed to inherit me is positive
Esther Kabeni: U should spend on me when am alive after death why all this show off???
Annita Wangui: Culture is culture you can’t change. That guy who said he’s a Christian doesn’t believe in such …when it comes to culture Christianity don’t matter.
Kiptoo Max Kip: First time in my life Maina Kageni I agree with you let’s do the Muslim way when it comes to burial am a Christian but I will be buried by Muslims.
Silas Lwanda: We are African and Africa and our culture is our diversity
King C K Mswati: The fact remains that she will be inherited, the question here is by who??
A family member
That ka-fisi across the road.
Samuel Musotsi: That caller who just talked about bullfighting tells him to be wise and stop being stupid. He doesn’t know what this means for us luhyas. Another thing is, maisha ni yako but matanga itabaki kuwa yetu.
Julius Muchiri: We are African there are some cultures you can’t do away with
LE Rael David: Kama makumbusho? Surely why should we spend thousands on it
Mongare Edwin: The next president akikufa nataka atembezwe through all the city in Kenya so that all the people could see him coz akuwa president wa Nairobi pekeyake
Ng’ash D Ng’ash: This is crazy. The things you say Maina.
Mary Mariah: Pray for them
