A grieving widow says her husband’s burial turned into a nightmare when mourners allegedly hurled her and her infant son into his open grave.
Edith Wekulu, a school caterer and mother of two, told TUKO.co.ke that her husband Samson, a police officer, died under circumstances that have never been fully explained to her.
The couple began living together in 2019 after meeting through a mutual police officer friend.
Samson stopped answering her calls from December 26, 2022, breaking a routine of daily communication that had never lapsed before.
On December 28, a colleague found him dead at home after he failed to report for duty.
That same day, Edith received his bank and M-Pesa PINs by message, along with word that his phone and wallet would be delivered to her.
At the burial, she hesitated to throw soil onto the coffin, as her father had advised, to avoid being permanently tied to her late husband as a young widow.
The pause enraged mourners, who accused her of causing his death.
“They were claiming that I was the one who had unalived their son, or rather, I was the reason he was dead,” she said.
The crowd allegedly demanded a machete and petrol, then pushed her into the grave, where she landed on the coffin as soil was poured over her.
Her son was reportedly thrown in as well.
Her brother, hampered by her recent childbirth and breastfeeding, managed to pull them both out before the crowd dragged and beat her, calling her a murderer.
A neighbour intervened to stop relatives from seizing her children, and police were called to restore calm.
Edith emerged with bruises after being dragged along the ground, and her in-laws later forced her father to return the dowry and made her sign away her ties to Samson, taking his property.
