Kiserian Businesswoman Achieng has broken her silence from prison, claiming she was wrongly convicted and sentenced to 10 years in jail following what she describes as false accusations and a flawed court process.
Now in her eighth year behind bars, Achieng says her life changed dramatically after a disagreement with a neighbour escalated into a serious criminal case.
Before her arrest, Achieng lived alone in Kiserian, where she ran a small boutique selling clothes.
She says the business was her only source of income and allowed her to live a modest but stable life.
During one of her visits to her rural home, Achieng met a young girl who had lost both parents and was living in extreme hardship.
Feeling sympathy for the child’s situation, she decided to take the girl with her to Kiserian, enroll her in school, and take care of her daily needs.
Achieng’s boutique was located on the ground floor of a building.
On the first floor of the same building, her neighbour, identified as Sofia, operated a nightclub.
According to Achieng, the relationship between the two women was peaceful at first, but problems began when Sofia approached her with troubling claims.
Sofia allegedly told Achieng that her son, who was in Standard Eight at the time, was involved in a romantic relationship with the orphaned girl staying with Achieng.
Shocked by the allegation, Achieng says she immediately questioned the girl, who denied the claims.
Achieng then warned the girl to stay away from Sofia’s son and told her that if the accusations continued, she would be taken back to the village.
Achieng believed the issue had been resolved, but a few days later, Sofia reportedly confronted her again.
This time, Sofia accused her own son of stealing money and giving it to Achieng, claiming that Achieng was using the money to enjoy life with the orphaned girl.
Achieng strongly denied the accusation, explaining that she worked hard for her money through her clothing business and did not depend on anyone else.
About two weeks later, Achieng says she received a phone call from someone asking where she was.
She replied that she was at a salon getting her hair done.
Shortly after, Sofia allegedly arrived at the salon accompanied by two police officers.
Achieng was arrested and taken to Kiserian Police Station.
It was there that she learned Sofia had accused her of defiling her son.
Achieng says she was shocked and confused, as she had never been arrested before or appeared in court.
She did not have a lawyer and did not understand the legal procedures or how to properly defend herself.
The court later found her guilty and sentenced her to 10 years in prison. She is now serving her eighth year.
