A dramatic scene unfolded in Kathigiriri village, Kirinyaga County, during the burial of 16-year-old Purity Makena Mugo. Furious mourners carried the girl’s coffin to the home of her suspected killer, demanding justice for her untimely and tragic death.

Makena’s body was discovered tied to a rock near a river on December 27, 2024, a horrifying revelation that left the community grieving and enraged. According to her aunt, Idah Mwensh, Makena was allegedly murdered on the night of December 26 by a boy she had been romantically involved with.

“Her boyfriend found out she was in another relationship. He caught her with another man, and that’s why she was killed,” Mwensh explained to the media . She added that both men were arrested and are currently in custody.

In an emotionally charged procession, residents carried Makena’s coffin along the village’s dirt roads and stormed the suspect’s home, vandalizing property and chasing his relatives out of the village. Photos shared on social media showed mourners gathered under a tent, listening to tributes before the burial ceremony.

Makena’s tragic death sparked widespread outrage online, with many Kenyans demanding justice. Comments flooded social media, expressing grief and anger.

“Justice must be served,” wrote Peter Kihumba.

“How is this person free in a free country?” asked Carol Carolyne.

Another commenter, Junior Kampala, echoed, “We need justice here.”

Despite the grief and calls for justice, Mwensh’s words highlighted the pain of the family: “Makena, my niece, rise and demand your revenge.”

Makena, born in 2008, was laid to rest amid tears and an urgent plea for accountability for her senseless death. The community continues to call for swift legal action against the suspects to bring closure to the mourning family.
