Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, accompanied by Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, visited Mukuru kwa Reuben to inspect the ongoing Ngong River clean-up initiative. The inspection, aimed at assessing the progress of the river’s rehabilitation, marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to restore one of Nairobi’s most polluted water bodies.

During the visit, Murkomen highlighted the government’s commitment to improving the environment and ensuring sustainable urban development. He emphasized the importance of cleaning up Ngong River, which has long been a source of pollution and environmental degradation, affecting both the local community and the surrounding ecosystem.

CS Murkomen announced that the government intends to expand the scope of the clean-up operation by increasing the workforce dedicated to the project. This expansion will involve recruiting more personnel to expedite the removal of waste and debris, as well as ensuring the long-term maintenance of the river’s cleanliness. The move is part of a broader strategy to address the environmental challenges in Nairobi’s informal settlements, where poor waste management has contributed significantly to the pollution of water sources.

“The government is fully committed to enhancing the quality of life for our citizens by ensuring that we create clean and safe environments for all. The Ngong River clean-up is just the beginning,” Murkomen said during the visit.

The Mukuru kwa Reuben community has long been affected by the pollution of Ngong River, with waste dumping and poor drainage systems exacerbating the environmental crisis. The expanded clean-up initiative will not only improve water quality but also reduce health risks associated with polluted environments, such as waterborne diseases.

Both CS Murkomen and PS Omollo expressed confidence that with increased manpower and resources, the project will achieve lasting results. The government has also pledged to continue working closely with local communities to promote environmental stewardship and ensure the river remains clean for future generations.
