Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has waded into the ongoing debate about parliamentary leadership following a High Court ruling that declared Azimio la Umoja the majority party in Parliament.

Speaking in Karen on Monday, February 10, 2025, during a meeting with Kiambu County leaders and stakeholders, Kindiki made a lighthearted remark about Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah’s position.

During the consultative meeting, which focused on development projects and government programs, Kindiki amused attendees by referring to Ichung’wah as the “Majority Leader of a broad-based government.”

His words came as a reaction to the recent court decision, which has sparked mixed reactions in the political arena.

The High Court’s ruling confirmed that Azimio la Umoja is the official majority party in Parliament, a decision that has reshaped the political debate.

The ruling is significant because some Azimio members are currently serving in President William Ruto’s administration as Cabinet Secretaries.

Ruto has often described his government as “broad-based,” especially after the recent Gen Z protests pushed for inclusivity and change in leadership.

With the court decision now in place, questions have emerged about what this means for parliamentary leadership.

While Azimio leaders have welcomed the ruling, Kenya Kwanza allies are challenging its implications.

Azimio politicians have celebrated the court’s decision, arguing that it affirms their rightful place in Parliament.

One leader remarked, “Justice has been served. This ruling confirms what we have always said that Azimio is the majority.”

On the other hand, Kenya Kwanza leaders have downplayed the ruling.

Kindiki’s humorous take on the matter suggests that the government may not be ready to fully acknowledge the decision.

One Kenya Kwanza member stated, “This ruling does not change the fact that we are running the government. The focus should be on service delivery, not political games.”
