Kikuyu elders have dismissed President William Ruto’s symbolic gesture of gifting 12 goats to retired President Uhuru Kenyatta during his recent visit to Ichaweri, Kiambu County.
The elders criticised the move, stating that it failed to address the underlying issues affecting the Mt Kenya region.
The dissatisfaction stems from the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua as Deputy President, which many in the community view as a betrayal.
The elders argued that Gachagua’s ousting left a scar on the region and that symbolic acts, such as gifting goats, cannot heal the wounds.
According to a Nation.Africa report dated December 14, the elders believe that reconciliation requires substantive action, including addressing grievances and involving traditional Kikuyu elders in the process.
They further noted that without cultural rituals and proper consultation, such gestures hold little significance.
“Offering goats is not enough to undo the damage caused by Gachagua’s impeachment. We were not consulted, and this act alone cannot bring healing,” one elder remarked.
The elders also questioned whether Ruto’s gesture was a genuine attempt at reconciliation or a calculated political move aimed at regaining favour in the Mt Kenya region as he prepares for re-election in 2027.
