Kibera woman persevered the chilly morning cold and later scorching sun in uhuru gardens to celebrate her son serving in the Kenya Navy wing of the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) march past the presidential dais during Jamhuri day celebrations.
Regina Owino was conspicuously noticeable thanks to her dress bearing colors in the national flags
She says she was over the moon when she met her son Nuru Hassan in ceremonial uniform ready to serve the nations, although they did not speak at length due to strict military timeline Jamhuri fete had to adhere to.
“Nimefurahi saana siku leo kwa sababu ya sherehe za jamhuri day na pia juu ya kijana yangu ambaye ana fanya na wanajeshi kikosi cha wana maji,nilifurahi aliposalimia asubuhi akiwa amevaa uniform,na pia alipokuwa anapita akiwa ana match” said Regina
Having lived in Kibera as a single parent for over three decades, Regina confess having difficulty in bringing up child in crime -prone slum to become a responsible youth like Hassan who now serves the country.

“Kibera ni ngumu sana kulea mtoto hadi akuwe mtu anaeza pendwa na watu wengine, lakini nilijaribu natunaeza shukuru mwenyezi mungu alitusaidia ,Hassani ni mtoto wa kawaidi tu lakini fundisha nidhamu akiwa mdogo sana.”Regina added
Regina adds that as oppose to many people who despise slums dwellers, she took leap of hope to live in Kibera to cut cost on housing expenses and save for her children’s education
About her six-year old ceremonial dress she said that she bought the dress when her son Hassan joined the military and she has been donning the dress in all military led event to celebrate her son’s undying patriotism.
“Hii nguo iko na miaka sita sasa niliishona wakati kijana yangu alijoin jeshi na nikasema nitaivaa kwa sherehe zote za jeshi.” She said
