In a surprising turn of events, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, a staunch supporter of the impeached former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, took to the podium today to read President William Ruto’s condolence message during a funeral service. Kahiga’s move comes as a shock to many, considering his vocal criticism of the President following the fallout with Gachagua.

For months, Kahiga has been one of the loudest voices accusing the President of betrayal. He has not shied away from publicly calling out the head of state, often addressing him by name rather than his official title. However, today’s gesture marked a stark departure from his usual defiance.

Unlike a recent incident in Murang’a where mourners rejected the President’s message, the scene today was different. Kahiga’s delivery was met with keen attention and applause from the congregants. This shift in reception contrasted sharply with the hostility experienced a few weeks ago when a messenger tasked with delivering the President’s condolences was chased away.

Interestingly, Kahiga’s demeanor also took a notable turn. For the first time in recent memory, he referred to the President as “His Excellency,” a gesture of respect that stood in sharp contrast to his previous tone.

Kahiga’s move has ignited intense debate about his loyalty. Many Kenyans are questioning whether his actions signal a shift in allegiance or a strategic maneuver. Critics argue that his willingness to represent the President at such a sensitive moment undermines his steadfast support for Gachagua.

Adding fuel to the fire, Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi recently accused Kahiga of engaging in secret meetings at State House. According to Wamumbi, while Kahiga publicly aligns himself with Gachagua, he has allegedly been courting favor with the President behind closed doors.
