A student at the University of Brighton in England named Jesse Mugambi, a DJ from Kenya, won Ksh7.6 million (€50,000) in a worldwide competition. In the Save the Night competition, which had 300 participants from 50 countries, Mugambi came out on top. The results were revealed in March. In his submission, he described an unusual nightclub that doubles as a recording studio during the day.
The University of Nairobi student, who is seeking a master’s degree in sustainable design, revealed that the difficulties young Kenyan musicians faced in launching their careers served as the inspiration for his invention. “Having faced challenges in pursuing my passion for music, I’m driven by the belief that countless young and old people long for opportunities to explore their musical itch,” said Mugambi.
His concept, the Studio Can-V, uses shipping containers as the building blocks of a sustainable design. The concept supports the studio being constructed by regional artists with deep ties to the capital, which will also act as a launchpad for up-and-coming musicians looking to make their debut in the music business.
