Terrence Creative ‘Wash Wash’ Series
Lawrence Macharia, better known by his stage name Terrence Creative, has been one of the most popular comedy acts in Kenya in recent years. Known for his different characters such as Kamami and Caretaker, it is his last three-part series dubbed ‘Wash Wash’ that was been a hit this year.
His online skits and the characters he depicts have earned him fans and other lucrative opportunities. The series that has amassed more than four million views on YouTube was based on the conversation about money laundering.
He came up with his newest character Papa Fred ‘Kemikal’ Ngamwaya where he flaunts the flashiest of clothes, jewellery, and dons lots of make-up. Armed with a heavy Congolese accent, he fleeces unsuspecting people with the promise of quick money in shady deals, scamming them millions in the process.
The thrilling series has propelled him to greater heights.
Kaycyy Pluto’s meteoric rise
Singer Mark Mbogo, famously known as Kaycyy Pluto has been one of the most successful artistes this year. He broke the record as the first-ever Kenyan artiste to be credited on a Top 10 billboard hit song for his songwriting contributions on Kanye West, The Weeknd and Lil Baby’s record – Hurricane.
Over the life of his career, he has released a couple of mixtapes, albums, and several singles as well as working as a writer and credited vocalist alongside several major artistes, including Kanye West, Lil Baby, Lil Wayne, and Travis Scott.
His meteoric rise this year has seen him being nominated for American Billboard Music Awards, 2021. He was featured in Kanye’s album Donda, among many other wins of the day. His was a perfect example of a perfect year.
Nikita Kering’s Afrima win
For all those living under a rock, Nikita is an award-winning 19-year-old Kenyan singer and songwriter. She rose to stardom after her song addressing violence in romantic relationships, Tragedy hit the airwaves. Tragedy was an EmPawa project sponsored by Mr Eazi.
Since tasting the fame, life seems to have been on an upward trajectory as she recently bagged not one, but two Afrima Awards.
But her winning did not start now. In 2018 she won the Pulse Music Video Awards (PMVA) for Best New Artiste and in 2019 Afrima Awards for Best Female Artiste in Eastern Africa. She also won the Revelation of the African Continent among other accolades and endorsements.
Eric Omondi Stunts
Comedian Eric Omondi has been on the headlines for the better part of this year. From threatening to beat Khaligraph Jones, exposing his baby mama and staging his own revolution demonstration, he has done it all. He has pushed boundaries with his clout chasing antics, we cannot write them all down.
Eric has constantly been at loggerheads with artistes both locally and internationally. Just recently, he ‘addressed the nation’ where he professed that he does not chase clout, rather, clout chases him.
Diana Marua’s rap career
This was termed the biggest joke of the year. The year was just chilling then, Bahati brought us the biggest surprise of the year. He unveiled his wife as a rapper. Now officially known as Diana B, Marua claimed she is the ‘Queen of African Rap’.
She also said she is inspired by the likes of Nicki Minaj, Shensea and Cardi B. Most netizens took this as an insult and went hammer and tongs after her. To add insult to injury, she released her rate card, which was in the tune of Sh850,000.
Well, as they say, numbers do not lie; her viewership skyrocketed in the span of a few hours.
Her inaugural song Hatutaachana addressed naysayers who have been waiting for her and Bahati to break up and has amassed slightly above 1.6 million views on YouTube despite all the trolls.
The song is also a remix to a song done by Bahati, Mtaachana Tuu, in which Diana B was featured as vixen.
Events safety
Not all events this year were well thought out and not all of them were bad. With the Covid-19 restrictions lifted, we all expected the entertainment scene to bounce back to its full potential.
But the return to nightlife concerts and festival outings has been bittersweet. Domestically, the safety of concert-goers and their belongings has been at the fore of things.
One particular venue has been on the receiving end despite positioning itself as the home ground of music festivities in Nairobi.
During such concerts, there have been multiple cases of daylight theft, rape, and the underage being allowed into the party. The venue has been notorious due to insecurity concerns, yet organisers flock to the venue due to the expansive space.
