Kenya’s flag has once again flown above other countries in the latest global ranking. Kenya has emerged as a more peaceful nation than both Saudi Arabia and the United States

According to the latest ‘World’s Most Peaceful Country 2023 Global Peace Index’ by Global Finance Magazine, Kenya has risen above war and chaos.

Ranking at 117, Kenya surpasses Saudi Arabia by two slots, while the United States falls to position 131, trailing behind Kenya by over 14 positions.

The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) compiled the rankings, assessing 163 independent states, covering 99.7% of the global population. The criteria include societal safety, ongoing conflicts, and militarization.

The report highlights a 0.42% global peacefulness decrease this year, marking the 13th decline in 15 years. The financial impact of violence globally is estimated at $17.5 trillion, equivalent to 12.9% of the total global GDP.

Notably, the number of refugees and internally displaced persons has surged to 85 million, with 15 nations having 5% of their population falling into these categories.

Saudi Arabia’s decline is attributed to limited freedom of expression and assembly, counteracting its previous trend of improvement in safety and security.

Meanwhile, the US grapples with persistent gun violence, claiming over 40,167 lives in 2023 alone.

In contrast, Kenya has seen a gradual decline in terrorism and internal violence over the past five years, particularly against the al Shabaab militia.
