The absence of renowned marathoner Eliud Kipchoge at the burial of fellow athlete Kelvin Kiptum has ignited a wave of controversy within the Kenyan sports community.

Kiptum, tragically killed in a road accident alongside his coach Gervais Hakizimana, was laid to rest on February 23, 2024, in Elgeyo Marakwet, with dignitaries including President William Ruto and World Athletics President Sebastian Coe in attendance.

However, conspicuous by his absence was Kipchoge, one of Kenya’s most celebrated athletes and a global icon in the world of distance running.

This absence has raised eyebrows, particularly in light of past interactions between the two athletes.

A post recently resurfaced showing Kiptum publicly praising Kipchoge as his “big brother” after Kipchoge received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Exeter in 2019.

Kiptum’s admiration for Kipchoge was evident as he congratulated him on his achievement and expressed how Kipchoge’s success had inspired him and many others.

This revelation has fueled the debate further, with many questioning why Kipchoge did not reciprocate the same level of acknowledgment and support for Kiptum, especially considering the latter’s remarkable achievements in the sport.

Despite breaking records and showcasing remarkable talent, Kiptum’s feats seemed to have gone unnoticed by Kipchoge on social media platforms, leading some to feel a sense of neglect.

While Kipchoge did extend his condolences to Kiptum’s family following the tragic accident, the lack of acknowledgment during Kiptum’s lifetime has left some feeling disappointed and disheartened.
