On Wednesday, President Ruto received a sad message from the head of the defense forces that were deployed in Congo to aid in the ongoing war between the M23 rebels and the government.

The sad message that has reached him is that some soldiers who were at the camp were killed, leaving others injured, after the M23 dropped weapons on their camp. According to recent news reports, violent fighting broke out over the weekend between M23 rebels and pro-government soldiers and armed groups in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, once again shifting the balance of power around a strategic town in Masisi territory. The clashes have continued, with M23 rebels clashing with soldiers on two fronts in eastern DR Congo on Tuesday, despite a regional ceasefire deal due to take effect.

During these clashes, an East African Community Regional Force (EACRF) soldier from Kenya was killed in an ambush. The M23 rebels have captured swathes of territory in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo since re-emerging from dormancy in late 2021, claiming the government had ignored a pledge to integrate them into the army. The Tutsi-led group is hemming in the lakeside trade hub of Goma, taking territory to the north of the city and advancing in the west as well.

Indeed, after having faced the determination of the FARDC on Tuesday, where they attacked one of our positions, the M23/RDF directed their mortar fire into forward EACRF positions. There has been a push to end the mission and pull out Kenyan forces, with some military observers claiming that the Kenyan deployment has not found a lasting solution to the war in the Eastern DRC.
