In what appears to be another significant victory for Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, the tide continues to turn in her favor following her recent impeachment ordeal. Governor Mwangaza, who was recently saved by the courts after the Senate voted for her impeachment, has now triumphed again as the Controller of Budget (COB) rejected a request that aimed to further undermine her authority.
The Meru Senator, Kathure Murungi, who led the charge in the impeachment proceedings, sought to block Governor Mwangaza from accessing and withdrawing county funds, citing the ongoing legal case. Murungi’s move was seen as a strategic attempt to weaken the Governor’s administration and stall her operations until the court proceedings conclude. However, the COB has delivered a decisive blow to this plan.
In an official letter addressed to Senator Murungi, the COB clarified that the request to restrict the Governor’s access to county funds was not feasible. The letter highlighted that when Governor Mwangaza appealed the Senate’s impeachment resolution, the court not only took up the case but also allowed her to resume her official duties pending the outcome of the trial scheduled for September. This judicial decision effectively rendered the Senator’s request null and void.
The COB further explained that Governor Mwangaza remains the legitimate head of Meru County and that her role, including access to and management of county revenues, is fully intact. Despite the Senate’s resolution, which is now under judicial review, the COB emphasized that the Governor’s functions are not to be impeded.
This development marks another setback for Senator Kathure Murungi, who has been relentless in his efforts to unseat Governor Mwangaza. First, the court ruled in her favor, allowing her to stay in office while the case is pending, and now, the COB has upheld her right to access county funds, enabling her to continue serving the people of Meru without disruption.
