Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has hinted at a possible political merger between the United Opposition and the Azimio la Umoja coalition ahead of the next general election.
Speaking during an interview on March 27, 2026, Kalonzo said discussions are already underway to bring the two sides together under one umbrella.
Kalonzo, who recently took up a leadership role within Azimio following the exit of Raila Odinga, explained that forming a completely new coalition may not be necessary. Instead, he suggested that leaders could agree on rebranding the existing Azimio coalition and invite other opposition members to join. According to him, time is limited, with only about 14 to 15 months remaining before the elections, making a merger the most practical option.
He revealed that the matter will be discussed further during a planned three-day retreat in Mombasa, which will bring together key opposition leaders. The meeting is expected to focus on unity, strategy, and how to strengthen the opposition ahead of the polls.
At the same time, Azimio leaders are working on internal restructuring. Secretary General Caroli Omondi has emphasized the need for the coalition to remain strong and influential. He suggested that the presidential candidate and running mate for the United Opposition should come from within Azimio, especially to reward regions that have consistently supported the coalition.
Meanwhile, Azimio chairman Uhuru Kenyatta has already begun making changes within the coalition. Leaders who joined the government have been removed from their positions, and loyal members have taken over.
Overall, Kalonzo’s proposal signals a growing push for opposition unity, which could play a key role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
