In an interview with SPM Buzz Nyawira says she chose to teach her daughter this even before she was born after she learnt she was to give birth to a girl.
“When she reached 8 is when we started having this conversation. The kind of content I create with her is because I want her to learn about these things from me, our parents never talked to us about stuff like this.
Even when our period started all they did is give us pads and tell us ‘sasa ujuwe unaweza pata mimba.’ When I knew I was getting a baby girl I knew I had to tell her these things.
I started this conversation about the period and her body changing at age 8.”

Mumbua says having the first-period conversation with her mum was difficult as she did not even know such things existed.
“Our first conversation was very difficult. At that age, I was not in the girly stuff. I was like do I really need to know this? It was hard to understand because I did not know what periods were and whether they existed.
Until you told me about it.”
Nyawira says she had not planned on starting the talk this early but did so after she learned of two friends who daughters started receiving their menses at age 8.
