In a surprising twist of events, Chief Justice Martha Koome, the head of the Judiciary, has issued a directive to Citizen TV, a prominent media outlet, demanding the withdrawal of a publication and an apology for airing a misleading story.
The Judiciary has criticized a segment aired on Citizen TV’s Monday Night Report, which featured reporter Brenda Wanga and alleged that the judiciary had redeemed itself through a recent judgment delivered by a three-judge bench of the High Court regarding the appointment of Chief Administrative Secretaries (CASs).
According to the Judiciary, the report aired by Citizen TV wrongly claimed that the judiciary had sworn in the CASs, which the Judiciary vehemently denies. The official notice from the Judiciary explicitly states that the judiciary played no part in the swearing-in ceremony of the CASs, whose positions have now been declared unconstitutional.
Brenda Wanga, the reporter in question, had asserted during the segment that the judiciary, long accused of supporting executive impunity, had participated in the swearing-in of the CASs, whose offices have now been deemed unconstitutional.
The Judiciary, emphasizing its non-involvement in the CAS swearing-in process, has directed Citizen TV to retract the report and rectify the record by offering an apology. This turn of events highlights the contentious nature of the story and the Judiciary’s insistence on clarifying its role in the matter.
