As the world marks ‘World Aids Day’, A Kenyan woman living with HIV/Aids has shared how she got infected.
Joyce Adhiambo says she was infected after being forced to sleep with a stranger to cleanse her family after her father’s death.
Sharing her experience with Waihiga Mwaura she said, ‘I lost my dad in 1998 and I was forced to have unprotected sex with a stranger to cleanse my family. That is how I became infected.”
Adhiambo said that after she got infected she decided to go to the streets and work as a night nurse.
“I didn’t have any certificates to acquire a job so I decided to do sex work to feed my kids. Sex work is a job like any other and I pay my bills through it. I chose to be a sex worker. If I get a better opportunity I might choose to exit from sex work. Right now I am a very active sex worker.”
