Head of State His Excellency Dr William Samoei Ruto has expressed his dismay of the exponential importation of leather despite the country slaughtering about 3 Million herds of livestock every year, from cows, to camels and sheep and goats.

Addressing via a statement dated today the 13th day of December 2023, Head of State His Excellency Dr William Samoei Ruto has vowed to ban importation of all leather products amongst them being leather shoes in the country in a strategic move fostered towards promoting local production of leather products.

The president underscored that it was solemnly abnoxious for leather, hides and skin to be consumed by dogs. Head of State articulated that his administration is investing in the completion of three tanneries.

“We are finalizing three tanneries. We are investing in completing three tanneries, one in Kenanie here, another one in Narok and one more place. It is the reason, and I say this with clarity, we must have a sunset clause on the day we are going to be importing shoes into Kenya. We must produce leather products from Kenya because we have the leather, hides and skin in plenty, we have the human capital at home, we have the market in Kenya. We import about 15 Million pairs of shoes every year, explain to me why we are using leather from other peoples’ goats and cows when our own leather, hides and skin is being eaten by dogs. It is stupid, isn’t it? So this is what we must do,” President Ruto stated.
