Renowned lawyer Wahome Thuku has caused a stir with a bold claim that Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome Kanja could be on his way out.
In a brief social media post, Thuku stated, “Inspector General of Police, Kanja could be fired. My thinking.”
His statement has since sparked intense public reactions, with many Kenyans expressing mixed feelings about Kanja’s performance.
Josephine Waithiru commented that the possibility of Kanja’s dismissal had been long anticipated.
“Too many mistakes since he took over,” she noted. Others were more scathing.
“He’ll be fired for incompetence then Ruto will hire him as a senior economic adviser,” joked Victor, criticizing the administration’s pattern of rewarding failed leadership.
Several commentators referred to Kanja’s handling of recent violent incidents. Andrew Muiga, for instance, condemned the IG’s demeanor during a peace meeting in Narok following the death of five people.
“He was laughing while promising mere transfers. He doesn’t seem serious,” Muiga said.
Some suggested that Kanja may be a victim of internal political games. “He’s being set up and he doesn’t even see it,” wrote Simon Karani, while Nancy Josa added, “He keeps falling into traps they set for him.”
Despite the criticism, there is no official word on Kanja’s removal. However, Thuku’s remark has clearly fueled speculation, leaving Kenyans wondering whether a major shake-up in the police leadership is imminent.
