Irungu Kang’ata, the governor of Murang’a County, has drawn attention to himself once more with a powerful letter explaining the problems that the Mount Kenya region faces. Kang’ata, a prolific writer, rose to prominence in December 2021 after drafting a letter to then-President Uhuru Kenyatta questioning the sustainability of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).
Kang’ata’s most recent letter identified four key dangers in the area. First, he expressed concern over the dwindling population, pointing out that reduced birth rates had resulted in an excess of elderly individuals. Second, Kang’ata highlighted the region’s incapacity to adjust to changing economic patterns, citing a lack of awareness among enterprises that could provide jobs in the future.
Kang’ata’s message emphasizes the urgency with which the Mount Kenya region must address these concerns in order to ensure a prosperous future. Kang’ata’s candour continues to spark crucial discussions about the region’s future and the measures required to address these issues while the area is suffering from them.
Meanwhile, we’ll wait to see what happens next.
