Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Ali Hassan Joho has warned those involving in Illegal mining activities.
Speaking during the Aquaculture Business Development Programme (ABDP) grants issuance event in Kakamega, CS Joho said the illegal miners are sabotaging country’s economy thus calling security officers to stay awake and not tolerate such activities.
“The government will intensify monitoring and enforcement to curb unregulated mining law enforcement agencies will take action against individuals and companies engaging in illegal mineral extraction”, said Hassan Joho.
On matters of environment, the CS acknowledged that Illegal mining is causing deforestation, land degradation, and water pollution, harming ecosystems and communities that surrounds mining areas.
He also emphasized the importance of sustainable and regulated mining to protect natural resources.
“The government aims to formalize mining operations so that both investors and local communities benefit fairly, I urge kenyans not to sell their minerals cheaply “, he stated.
CS Joho urged miners to obtain legal licenses and adhere to national mining regulations. He called upon County Security team led by Commissioner Mwangi Meru to be on forefront and protect communities that lives within mineral disposal areas.
“Mining companies and artisanal miners should work with county and national authorities to ensure responsible mining practices and the government will increase inspections in mining regions, including Kakamega, which has gold deposits and other minerals to cub mineral piracy.” Said Joho.
However, he encouraged stakeholders in the mining sector to register their operations and follow best practices to avoid legal consequences that may lead to closure of their sites.
