Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua, a Kenyan politician currently serving as the Deputy President of Kenya since 2022 under the United Democratic Alliance party, has distanced himself from the controversial Adani deal, asserting that the details of the arrangement were never presented to the Cabinet Committee.

Despite his senior position in President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza (KK) government, Gachagua insists he was not privy to the particulars surrounding the deal, which has stirred considerable public and political debate.

Speaking during a recent interview, Gachagua reiterated that the agreement was not discussed in any formal government setting, including the Cabinet. “The Adani deal never came before the Cabinet Committee. I was never informed, nor was it ever a subject of our deliberations,” he stated emphatically.

This denial comes amid growing scrutiny over the involvement of the Adani Group, an Indian multinational, in various infrastructure projects within Kenya.
Critics of the deal have raised concerns about transparency and the process through which the Adani Group was awarded these contracts, alleging possible bypassing of procedural standards.

Gachagua’s comments appear to align with these critiques, subtly suggesting that certain sectors of the government might have been left out of the decision-making process.

However, some political analysts have questioned Gachagua’s stance, noting that as Deputy President, his role includes significant oversight and decision-making within the government.

His denial has prompted speculation regarding the internal dynamics of Ruto’s administration, raising questions about the level of transparency within the ruling coalition.

As the controversy continues, Gachagua’s declaration adds another layer of complexity, leaving Kenyans and political observers eagerly awaiting further clarification on how the Adani deal was struck and who was ultimately responsible for its approval.
