Ex British soldier David Etale has opened up on how strained his relationship with his dad was because he (David) wanted to become a footballer.
Etale’s dad had been a footballer before and hence he did not want his son to follow in his footsteps as he knew the struggles involved.
Sharing his personal story on ‘Engage’, Etale shared that the one thing he regrets is threatening his father if he ever came between what Etale loved most (football).
“I started playing football at a very young age and I knew I wanted to play professionally. Clubs started looking for me so that they could sign me to be a professional footballer. I did not know that was the beginning of a toxic relationship with my dad.
It was so toxic beyond words. He kept telling me he did not want me to be a footballer. I got signed by KCB but they were not paying much so I started storing guns for my friends. I used to store different kinds of guns, I was young and naive.”
Etale lived in a servant quarter at their compound hence he was not found out by his parents;
“One day my dad realized what I was doing and he approached me. I warned my dad that if he ever came between me and football I would personally wipe him off (kill him) something I regret to date.
After that he would either come home in a taxi or he would be brought home by my uncle for two months.
