Some hours ago popular Kenyan journalist Fredrick Mwitiriri who currently works with NTV Kenya was live in an interview, where he talked about his personal life from birth to now. Fred was born and raised in Naivasha, Nakuru county, until during the post-election violence which forced them to relocate to Wanyororo when he was in class two. After form four exams he got a C- and all he wanted was to became a journalist in future.
His mother being a single mother was determined to make his dream come true. He wanted to go back to school since journalism lowest qualification was a C. Instead of going back to school that was when he started hustling like other men and he decided to join police force. Fortunately Kenya media school announced recruitment with a minimum requirement of C- in KCSE.
His mother could not afford to pay the 49,000 school fees and he decided to join police and save money to go back to school. He went to Kiganjo for training and he was posted in Isiolo. He started saving out of 11,000 salary, and when he got 52,000 he immediately applied for journalism course in Kenya media school. Unfortunately police refused to give him a transfer to Nairobi and he tried for more than three months.
After going to all higher offices and it was impossible to get a transfer, he decided to resign and follow his dream in media. He wrote a resignation letter which his family was against, but OCS supported him and asked him to go and follow his dream. He joined school thinking it was easy and that was where his problems began. He couldn’t even afford to buy himself food, since he didn’t have a plan B.
After graduating he started struggling and one of his friends invited him for an internship in standard media group. His girlfriend was a teacher under BOM and she was supporting him because he was not getting paid. Paul Baraza who was by then very popular recorded his voice and sent it to Radio Maisha and that was how he got employed at radio Maisha.
After three years he joined Inooro tv in 2015 and worked until 2020 when they were fired. They were told that as a result of COVID-19, the station could not afford to pay their salaries. After eight days he joined switch tv news broadcasting and he was to present in English. He tried his best to present in English and he was successful. After one and half years the station was closed and TV47 interviewed him to join them. He worked in TV47 for six months and NTV Kenya invited him where he is working to date.
