The Jubilee party in Nairobi announced that it would not participate in the demos, dealing a blow to Raila Odinga’s plans for mass action rallies in the capital city.

Jubilee Nairobi Branch Chair Mark Ndung’u told Kenyans.co.ke that his group would not take part in civil action that would make it harder to do business in Nairobi.

Ndung’u requested that the former Premier either ensure the safety of enterprises, particularly in the central business district, or call off the demonstrations.

“The amount of loss incurred during the mass action protests is in the public domain. Protests undermine the ease and freedom of doing business and we will not allow that,” he stated.

After the protests turned violent, the former Makadara parliamentary candidate issued a warning to party leader and ex-president Uhuru Kenyatta.

“We saw the real financier of the protests, Uhuru Kenyatta, who came out last week. I want to let him know that just as they have their business, mama mboga also relies on business.

“If there is any theft of property or deaths or violence, then we will march to his investments and disrupt his business,” he stated.

Hours earlier, on May 1, Odinga had assured the public that the scheduled picketing exercise would begin at 6 a.m. on May 2.

Raila told the police that the rallies would be peaceful and advised them not to agitate his supporters in response to Nairobi Police boss Adamson Bungei’s prohibition on the demonstrations.
