Huge Blow to Junior Secondary Schools as Government Declares The Following Major Changes.

The Kenyan government’s declaration of a planned reduction in infrastructure and capitation financing has dealt a significant blow to junior secondary schools inside Kenya’s large borders.

On May 19, 2024, the Kenyan government announced, through Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang, that funding for junior secondary schools across the country will be decreased by a significant Ksh20.7 billion.

The Ministry of Education requested Sh46.190 billion in funding for Junior Secondary Schools in order to ensure seamless learning activities at the institutions, but the Kenyan government has hinted that the schools will receive Ksh25.46 billion in capitation instead.

Furthermore, the Kenyan government announced a huge reduction in infrastructure financing for junior secondary schools. The Kenyan government has announced that junior secondary schools will receive Ksh3.4 billion for facility upgrades. Given that the Ministry of Education had asked KSh5 billion for the construction of junior secondary school infrastructure, the Ksh1.6 billion cut is remarkable.
