Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, who represents former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s constituency, was part of the team that escorted Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on a visit of Nyeri. The visit was intended to launch an electrical project in the Kieni Constituency, but it also occurred during a period of heightened regional tensions.

Wamumbi, a prominent supporter of President William Ruto, tried to excite the throng by leading a chant in his favour. In a popular video, he can be seen chanting, “Ruto! Ruto! Ruto!” in the hopes that others will join in. However, the reaction was not what he had expected. The majority of the audience remained silent, with only a few of young individuals replying.

The lack of enthusiasm was obvious, indicating that many in the region were hesitant to display open support for Ruto. The reaction also reflected the changing tone on Mount Kenya, where many people have expressed unhappiness with the government. The visit occurred just months after Gachagua was removed from office by impeachment, a move that outraged some citizens.

Gachagua has since positioned himself as a vocal adversary of Ruto, alleging that the region no longer supports the president. His influence may have played a role in Wamumbi and Kindiki’s frigid reception. Mt. Kenya has traditionally been a stronghold for Ruto, but the reaction in Nyeri signals that this is changing. As the 2027 elections approach, the region’s political status remains unsettled. It will be interesting to see if other leaders react similarly in future events.
