A section of Kakamega residents on Monday booed and heckled Mumias West MP Johnson Manya in front of President William Ruto.

The MP took to the stage and urged locals to vote for Ruto in the 2027 poll. However, in his surprise, the crowd expressed displeasure with his remarks and demanded him to leave the podium.

The MP took criticism and noted that he doesn’t play politics but he will cast his vote in favor of Ruto’s second term.

Earlier, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya slammed government for raiding Kenyans payslips.

Salasya also questioned the source of the funds allocated for the farmersā€™ bonuses, asking, ā€œWhere is the money we are giving these farmers coming from? We need to know because it was not in our budget.ā€

He went further to suggest that the President is short of advisors.

ā€œI want to ask you, Mr President, to hire me as your advisor because your people are not being honest with you,ā€ Salasya remarked.

President Ruto vowed to stay committed to his development agenda, including the affordable housing plan, despite mounting criticism and advice from his allies to shift focus to more populist politics.

Ruto reaffirmed his determination to steer the country toward a development-oriented path, even as some of his close allies urged him to abandon projects unpopular with a significant portion of Kenyans.

Speaking at Mumias Sugar Factory during the distribution of a Sh150 million bonus to sugarcane farmers, Ruto dismissed critics, emphasizing that populist politics cannot drive meaningful change.

“Don’t worry about the ongoing noise in politicsā€”it will come to an end. Ultimately, Kenyans will judge performance at the ballot. Those making noise on social media will struggle to compete with me,” Ruto stated.

Meanwhile, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has begun assembling a team to prepare for a political showdown with his former boss, President Ruto.

Since the festive season, Gachagua has hosted businessmen, MCAs, MPs, and 2027 aspirants at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyandarua County, strategizing to consolidate influence in the Mt Kenya region by replacing dissenting MPs with loyalists.

This initiative is reportedly aimed at challenging MPs who voted for his impeachment. Gachagua, ousted from office in October, has promised to unveil his political strategy this month.

However, Gatanga MP Edward Muriu, an ally of Gachagua, dismissed the approach as irrelevant.

“The strategy holds no weight and wonā€™t change Mt Kenya politics. Remember, Mt Kenya rejected Kenyatta and Rutoā€”itā€™s a zero-sum game. Mt Kenya has moved on,” Muriu commented.
