He is best remembered for being Kenya’s longest serving Attorney General. For 20 years, Amos Wako was the occupant of the State Law Office along Harambee Avenue.

As the country’s Chief Legal Advisor, Wako was one of the most powerful men around former President Daniel Arap Moi.

Even after the exit of Moi from power in 2002, Wako remained in the position for another eight years, serving under Moi’s successor, Mwai Kibaki.

The promulgation of the 2010 Constitution pushed Wako out of office in 2011. It was the end of his checkered reign as Attorney General. He was succeeded by renowned legal scholar, Prof. Githu Muigai.

In 2013, Wako, the London School of Economics- trained Economist made a huge plunge into the murky world of politics. He ran for the Busia County senator position which he won on an ODM party ticket.

In 2017, the senior counsel ran for another term as senator and was easily re-elected. He was part of the NASA coalition presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s team of lawyers that successfully challenged President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election.

In 2019, the former Attorney General was banned by USA from stepping his foot to the country.

During the 2022 general election, Wako decided not to run for any elective position even as he opted to hang his boots.

After spending a few months in the cold, in 2023, the former Senator was appointed by Busia County Governor Dr Paul Otuoma as a member of the Busia County Budget and Economic Forum.

Wako was picked by the ODM Governor to represent the elderly people. He was appointed alongside former Nambale MP Chris Okemo.
