He had wholeheartedly served the country for the entire period of his military service. But the late Major General George Nadida Agoi died a bitter man after being betrayed by the government.

In the aftermath of the 1998 bombing of the USA embassy in Nairobi, Major General Agoi was appointed to lead the rescue mission.

For his exemplary performance during the operation, he received praise from all over the world. The Kenya Army soldier had suddenly became a hero. Clearly, he was headed to greatness. But in an interview with the Standard in 2009, Major General Agoi claimed that his success did not please his bosses.

Because of the good work he had done, he was invited to attend disaster management seminars in USA, Israel and South Africa. But some invites were thwarted before reaching him.

In 1999, he was surprisingly retired from the military and appointed as Kenya’s Ambassador to Ethiopia. Even though President Daniel Arap Moi had defended his move to appoint Agoi as an envoy, to him, it was a polite way of hounding him out of the military barracks.

The decorated former Kenya Army general would go on to serve as an ambassador for only one term before being sent into oblivion.

As Moi’s successor Mwai Kibaki took over the reigns of power, he moved with speed to get rid of the former regime’s diplomatic appointees. It was final nail on Major General Agoi’s military and diplomatic coffin.

The fallen hero breathed his last in 2021 and was mourner by former President Uhuru Kenyatta as a true Kenyan patriot and a hero who served the country with dedication. But deep inside Major General Agoi, he was a bitter man who felt let down by his own Government.
