It’s common to see people hustling hard to make ends meet and pay bills in Kenya, which is a nature ingrained in us by our parents. However, a recent photo depicting a mother and her young daughter embarking on their day’s work in the early hours has sparked varied reactions among Kenyans.

The image, captured near Alliance Boys/Girls in Kikuyu, Kiambu, depicts a scene where a mother and her young daughter are walking early in the morning amidst traffic and the mother is pushing a trolley which is common among eggs and smokies vendors.

The image seemingly attracted the attention of blogger and lawyer Wahome Thuku who went on to capture them and share on his social media page. The blogger who normally commentates on viral issues said he spotted the mother and daughter around 6 A.M, and said the two are up for hard work. He said this is early mentoring.

However, this did not go well with a section of his followers, for some, they interpreted it as a form of early mentoring, while others said it was the harsh reality faced by many families, particularly concerning the lack of viable opportunities and the necessity for individuals to engage in menial labor and such kids not getting enough sleep to survive.

Additionally, some said it won’t be fare if the government taxed such people. Some mentioned about the proposed taxation policies, particularly in light of ongoing measures to tax all businesses by President Ruto’s government.
