Jimmy Kibaki told mourners at Nyayo Stadium of his fathers last moments before death
During the funeral service of the late former President Mwai Kibaki, his son Jimmy addressed mourners and recalled how the military took over after announcing his fathers death.
Jimmy told mourners at Nyayo Stadium that the military ‘really assisted us to understand that even if mzee was their commander in chief he as first our father’
Jimmy added ‘We the kibaki family would like to thank out fellow Kenyan citizens who have come out to honor mzee to mourn with us, to grieve with us, to condole with us and to tell us pole. We have met so many Kenyans on Monday Tuesday when mzee was lying in state and you know listened to stories how they related with mzee. And we realized that as a family that the lose was as great as it was for our family and I remember thinking at one point if mzee was to wake up, his response would be to wonder why we are not at work’

Jimmy added ‘my dad would say wacheni kuregarega na mrudi kazini because for him work ws very important. If there was one word that could encapsulate his life is excellence. From the moment he left the village up to the day he retired as a president. His journey has been a journey to excel, it means trying your best and what mzee aspired us to do is to do our best. So as Kenyans as we lay to rest this great mind of Kenya to rest beside his beloved wife Lucy, let us dedicate ourselves to excel for Kenya.
Mzeed dedicated 54 years of his live in the service of Kenyans so you can see the example of his life that he was the ultimate Kenyan patriot. Your excellency those of us who understand the dynamics between mzee and you, we know that mzee was very fond of you, in fact the relationship was that of father and son. Infact I would watch the 7 oclock news and he would doze off when some politicians spoke, but when you came on the screen, he would sit up and listen very keenly and he would turn to me and say good man or good fellow and those of you who know mzee that was the ultimate praise.
