A Kenyan man who had spent years working in mjengo (construction) has died abroad after being hit by a missile during the ongoing war in Ukraine.
David Shitanda, described by friends and family as hardworking and determined, reportedly left Kenya in search of better opportunities. Like many young men struggling with unemployment at home, he hoped to find greener pastures overseas and improve the lives of his loved ones.
According to reports shared online, Shitanda travelled to Eastern Europe in recent months. However, tragedy struck when he was caught in a deadly attack involving a Ukrainian missile. Details about the exact location and circumstances of the incident remain unclear, but the news has shocked many Kenyans.
The story came to public attention after activist and photojournalist Boniface Mwangi shared the information on social media. The post quickly spread, sparking emotional reactions from Kenyans who expressed sorrow and anger over the loss.
Many people online said the incident highlights the dangers faced by Africans seeking jobs abroad, especially in regions experiencing conflict. Some users called for stronger government support and protection for Kenyans working overseas, while others urged young people to be cautious when chasing opportunities in unstable countries.
Back home, Shitanda’s death has left his family and friends devastated. Those who knew him say he was a humble man who worked tirelessly in mjengo jobs for years before deciding to leave the country in search of a better future.
His tragic end has reignited conversations about unemployment, migration, and the risks many Kenyans take while trying to build a better life outside the country.
