Nelson Havi, a renowned lawyer, former President of the LSK, and political commentator, has lauded the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi for its courageous decision to reject financial donations from President William Ruto and Governor Johnson Sakaja.

This bold move, announced by Archbishop Philip Anyolo, has sparked a nationwide conversation about the role of religious institutions in combating corruption and resisting political manipulation.

The Archdiocese has pledged to refund KSh 600,000 donated to the choir and KSh 2 million intended for the construction of a priests’ residence. Additionally, promises of KSh 3 million and a parish bus have been unequivocally declined.

Havi declared on X, “The Church is not and should never be the bully pulpit for elected or appointed leaders to purchase the silence of the clergy or congregants.”

His statement reflects the public’s admiration for the Church’s decision, which many view as a watershed moment in defending moral integrity. Critics have accused politicians of using religion as a platform for self-promotion, with one observer noting, “Let them attend church, worship, and leave! No more political bribery.”

By standing firm, the Catholic Church has set a powerful precedent for faith-based organisations, underscoring the importance of independence and the rejection of corrupt financial incentives. This defiant stand inspires hope for a future where religious institutions remain true moral compasses for society.
