Speaking on Saturday at a burial in Gitero, Nyeri Town constituency, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga and his Laikipia counterpart Joshua Irungu expressed concern that Odinga could “infiltrate” government through his new-found rapprochement with President Ruto.

Laikipia Senator John Kinyua and Woman Representative Jane Kagiri echoed the sentiments.

“He (Ruto) must be careful. We have seen in the past [Raila] utilizing such an opportunity to infiltrate Moi, Kibaki, and Uhuru government and wrecking the boat from within,” Kahiga said referring to the 2018 handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Odinga, and similar deals with previous regimes.

‘The mountain is watching’
Kahiga said the electorate, in Mt Kenya, was monitoring the situation closely.

“In the past, we have seen how the then deputy and now president William Ruto was treated on entry of Odinga in Uhuru’s administration we would not like a similar scenario to happen to our son,” Kahiga said.

Irungu termed Odinga as a crafty politician. He said Odinga cannot be trusted.

“Ruto should deal with Odinga in a situation where one has to sleep with one eye closed while the other open since he can start something fishy anytime,” said Irungu.

Laikipia East lawmaker Mwangi Kiunjuri however expressed a contrary opinion saying Ruto’s backing of Odinga’s AU Commission bid was nothing to worry about.

“Mt Kenya region should have no reason to worry even if Odinga is accommodated in the government,” he said.

Kiunjuri dismissed concerns over the possible destabilization of the region’s interest hinting at Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s assertion of shareholding in government.

“The issue of shares will not only affect the Kikuyus; it will [affect] everybody hence there is no need to worry,” he said.
