In response to the delay in the reopening of schools caused by heavy rains, the Ministry of Education is contemplating shortening the August holiday.

This measure aims to provide ample time for the completion of the syllabus, which has been disrupted by the recent adverse weather conditions.

The postponement of the school opening dates from May 6 to May 13 was prompted by widespread flooding across the country, impacting over 1900 schools, with some submerged entirely.

To address the flooding situation and ensure preparedness for school reopening, Ndindi Nyoro, chairperson of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, assured that Parliament would prioritize spending on flood mitigation measures, with all expenditures subject to parliamentary approval.

The government had previously requested Ksh10.6 billion to address the ongoing deluge causing havoc nationwide.

Collins Oyuu, Chairman of the Kenya National Union of Teachers, highlighted the need for the Ministry to reassess the academic calendar, potentially adjusting the dates for the KCSE exams. However, as of now, the ministry has not issued any directives regarding a revised calendar.
