The government has this afternoon issued a warning against handling and consuming uninspected meat. The warning has been issued following the outbreak of Rift Valley Fever (RVF).

Government Spokesperson Issac Mwaura emphasized that the disease, initially affecting animals, has been confirmed in Mandera, prompting ongoing investigations to determine its extent.

Humans can contract the virus through mosquito bites, acting as transmitters. The government attributes the outbreak to recent heavy rains, causing a surge in mosquito population and increased transmission of vector-borne diseases nationwide.

The statement urged caution in all counties and advised individuals with cattle to use protective gear during cattle delivery and properly dispose of carcasses. Those experiencing fever were encouraged to seek assessment at the nearest health facility.

The government has distributed over 1.2 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets across the country and urged the public to use them. Collaborating with agencies like the Directorate of Veterinary Services, the government is monitoring the disease’s spread, with updates to be provided as developments unfold.
