The Iconic Hilton hotel will cease its operations by December 2022. The hotel that was officially opened by Kenya’s first president Jomo Kenyatta has been in operation for 53 years.
Hilton Hotel will close its doors indefinitely and lay off an unspecified number of workers, underlining the troubles of hotels in the wake of the Covid-19 travel slump.
Some of the factors that led to the closure of Hilton include, a not so good location for a five-star hotel, competition, Air Bnb’s mega-success and the advent of newer and boutique establishments with experiential services.
Here are reactions by KOT to the impending closure.
@Madoka_Ke: Very Sad to see a high-end Hotel like Hilton being brought down after 53 yrs Yet WESTON HOTEL is working perfectly or is it a scheme of MONEY LAUNDRY
@sampao_p: Hilton is shutting down in Kenya because they assumed people will go there for their big name. We are in the age of customer experience, big brand names without a super nice experience in hospitality won’t cut it in the new marketplace.
@edgarakidi: Kenyans feeling sorry for Hilton Hotel being closed down you might think they used to eat and sleep there. Stick to vibandaski!
