In a recent Facebook post, Maragua Member of Parliament Alice Wamaua, a close ally of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, publicly chastised President William Ruto for failing to protect his deputy amid internal party conflicts. Wamaua expressed concern about the emerging division within the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), in which some party leaders, including National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, have backed Interior Security Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as the new political kingpin of the Mt. Kenya region.

This endorsement has prompted outrage among Gachagua followers, who regard it as an attempt to undermine his power in the region. Wamaua questioned why the President was permitting such moves under his watch, claiming that they could destabilise the party’s cohesiveness. She asked the Majority Leader to focus on uniting Parliament to champion voters’ interests rather than causing divisions.

Wamaua also warned against forsaking an elected leader, Gachagua, in favour of an appointed figure, citing political ramifications for the Mt. Kenya region. She emphasised that sovereign authority belongs to the people and that elected leaders must preserve their citizens’ trust and support.
