Living with your parents can be tough at any age, and one Gen Z woman’s hysterical reaction to her dad’s question has gone viral on TikTok.

In a video posted on June 5, by Eden Goodenough, 23, (@eden.goodenough) an onscreen caption explains: “POV: you’re 23 and still live with your parents,” and shows Goodenough calling out to her dad that she was going on a run.

“Dad, I’m going on a run,” she said. “What?” her dad responded.

“I’m going on a run,” she repeated, with her dad responding: “You have your phone with you?”

The video which garnered 2.9 million views and 265,100 likes, shows Goodenough bemused that her father would even question her having her phone on her. “Why wouldn’t I have my phone #livingthedream,” she added in the caption.

According to a 2020 report from the Pew Research Center, 52 percent of young adults aged 18 to 29 were living with their parents, the highest percentage recorded since the Great Depression era.

This trend has been influenced by various factors, including economic challenges, the COVID-19 pandemic, and shifting social norms.

Though it is more common for adults to leave the nest later in life, there are some problems that can arise.

Adults can feel a reduced sense of autonomy and privacy from sharing their space and might feel more inclined to fall back into a parent-child, infantilizing dynamic, according to the Australian Psychological Society.

Family conflicts can also arise, and individuals might feel a sense of stigma attached to not having left home.

On the flipside, living with parents is often a great way to save money to invest in your future and pay off student debts.

Many users related to Goodenough’s daily struggle of a lack of independence.

“God this is so real, the questions and hearing problems,” said one user. “The what is so real I can’t,” said Summer.

“I’m 35 and my mom won’t let me go to Disney Springs with my two guy friends smh,” said Kellie.

“Me leaving the house every day to the gym in a full workout fit being asked ‘where are you going,’” said another TikToker.

“Thank God I’m not the one whose dad ALWAYS ASKS IF I HAVE my PHONE. I’m a 24 y.o. teenager of course I do,” said Izzy.

“Each time you leave the house it’s ‘where you going?’… then you remember the money you’re saving not paying rent,” said Umair.
