The Eldoret court has ordered the key witness in the ongoing case against Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago to appear in person, warning that an arrest warrant may be issued if she fails to comply. Mercy Tarus is accused of contempt of court after disregarding an earlier order issued on September 8 related to the case against Senator Mandago. The senator is facing charges of misappropriating KSh 1 billion allocated for an overseas education program by the county.

Senior Magistrate Peter Ndege stated that contempt of court is a criminal offense and emphasized that Tarus must attend in person, just like other prosecution witnesses.

The defense lawyer, Stephen Kibungei, criticized Tarus for requesting to appear virtually, arguing that she is seeking special treatment while other witnesses, including high-ranking officials like Governor Jonathan Bii, have adhered to the court’s orders and appeared in person. The case has attracted significant public attention due to its high-profile nature and the substantial amount of money involved.
